ES: Water Quality - pH

Title: Water Quality - pH
Location: http://urbanwatershed.org/modules/pH/pH.htm
Project: Environmental Science
Creator:
Subject area:
Grade level: 11, 12
Purpose: This site defines pH and lists the pH value of a few commonly found substances (such as vinegar, baking soda, ammonia). It discusses normal and problematic pH levels of water and what determines pH in water. It examines the relationship between carbon dioxide level and pH, and the effects of one product of increased CO2 levels: acid rain. Teacher's guide is included.
Standards:
Type: Text
Duration:
Student Objectives: Students will review the concept of pH; understand the range and causes of pH variation in water; learn to describe the origin and nature of acid precipitation; and hypothesize about the effects of acid precipitation on the northern hydrologic cycle and aquatic life.
Activities: Four lab activities suggested.
