ES: Water Quality - Temperature

Title: Water Quality - Temperature
Location: http://urbanwatershed.org/modules/temperature/temperature.htm
Project: Environmental Science
Creator:
Subject area: Science
Grade level: 11, 12
Purpose: Learning about the effects of temperature on aquatic life and taking readings of different water samples fulfills several high school educational standards. It gives students essential practice in "gathering, recording and interpreting data" to gain understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry. This site discusses the importance of water temperature in a creek environment, ways to control temperature, and the effects of thermal pollution in creeks and streams. It includes suggested activities, a glossary of related terms, and temperature scale conversion formulae.
Standards:
Type: Text
Duration:
Student Objectives: Students will learn: freezing/boiling temperatures of water (Centigrade, Fahrenheit and Kelvin); definitions of "viscosity", "latent heat of fusion/vaporization" and "absolute zero"; how a thermometer works (by measuring the expansion level of mercury); what factors effect water temperature; temperature range in which various local species are capable of survival; theory of diffusion; local sources of thermal pollution; what temperatures are appropriate for irrigation/farming; higher temperature is a result of molecules moving faster.
Activities: Three activities suggested.
