ES: Water Quality - DO

Title: Water Quality - Dissolved Oxygen
Location: http://urbanwatershed.org/modules/do/DO.htm
Project: Environmental Science
Creator:
Subject area: Science
Grade level: 11, 12
Purpose: The educational standard for high school science states, "The student must know the properties that make water an essential component of the earth system." Dissolved Oxygen (DO) is one of these properties, as oxygen is an essential element of life. In addition, the volume of oxygen dissolved in water is dependent upon other water quality parameters (explored in the other sites in this suite of learning materials), as well as the level of organic matter present. Understanding the factors that determine DO levels in a body of water gives the student a clear picture of the dynamic interplay of these parameters.
Standards:
Type: Text
Duration:
Student Objectives: Students will gain an understanding of the chemical nature of both oygen and water; understand the process by which fish obtain oxygen; know definitions of dissolved oxygen, stratification, microbes, respiration and gas solubility; gain an understanding of the chemical processes of photosynthesis; know and understand the factors which increase/decrease levels of DO; be able to explain/point out why levels are high/low at a given location; and gain a partial understanding of how the measuring devices for DO work.
