On Tuesday, March 6, members of the IU team gave a presentation of the IU New Model to the UC Berkeley Council of Deans. An online tour of the new model is now available. This tour introduces the future IU, explaining proposed IU services and technology currently in development.
The new IU model is an original approach, building on five years of campus and K-12 collaboration. When complete, it will enable IU Projects from departments and units all across campus to create indexed content from academic, research, and historical resources for K-12 teachers and learners. The IU's web-based Open Learning Environment--still in development--when completed will provide portal-like access to, and dissemination of, these new materials. All learners in the K-12 community, and beyond, who have access to the Internet will have access to the knowledge and people at Berkeley.
The purpose of presenting to the Council of Deans is to begin dissemination of the IU new model, and to initiate new relationships. The IU continues to seek out and establish, across the entire spectrum of the campus, the collaborative partnerships that are essential to making the wealth of knowledge and people at Berkeley available over the Internet to K-12 communities and learners everywhere, and welcomes collaboration and participation from all segments of the campus academic community.
Current IU projects continue to deliver the unique resources and people of UC Berkeley via the Internet to Bay Area K-12 teachers, disseminating digital learning materials and learning objects, doing evaluation, and reflecting on past work with an eye to the future.
The future plans include a vision of large scale campus involvement with K-12 communities, and are guided by four principles:
Build from the academic core of campus.
Focus on K-12 teachers.
Innovate with Internet technologies.
Design for scale.
