DLM Index feature: César Chavez was born March 31, 1927 and died in April 1993. His life’s work, and a history of the United Farm Workers, is profiled in this month’s featured resource. The material is designed to introduce the concept of primary sources in the study of the conflict between growers and farm workers; to engage students in the examination of primary sources; and to prompt students to think critically about the source, context, and point of view when encountering primary sources. It is geared to high school students, and meets social studies, history and geography standards.

| Vice Chancellor Padilla Meets Y-Plan Students |
On Wednesday, March 19th, 2003 Vice Chancellor Genaro Padilla visited McClymonds High School in Oakland to meet with 10th grade English students participating in the Y-PLAN - an IU supported project to expose high school students to urban planning and design.
Dr. Padilla's scholarship focuses on the formation of Mexican-American autobiography, and on multicultural and urban American literary experience. Padilla led an intense and rewarding hour-long discussion with 20 students who recently read House on Mango Street, a series of interlocking stories about coming of age in the Latino section of Chicago by Sandra Cisceros.
The impetus for the visit and discussion grew out of an NEH grant prepared last October by IU's Deborah McKoy and Professor Padilla. The goal of the proposed work is to develop new humanities curriculum at McClymonds by connecting it to the literary and social history of West Oakland, which is the core focus of this year's Y-PLAN.
