DLM Index feature: "IT Careers". This month's featured resource was prepared by UCB undergraduate Education 191H students in collaboration with the Interactive University. The purpose of the IT Careers website is to help students become familiar with Information Technology and be able to connect the knowledge they have from classroom to jobs and careers. This project also hopes to break the myths and pre-conceived biases that students have about technology. The Careers project strives to incorporate information about: weblogging, researching companies, and powerpoint presentations.

On Thursday, November 7th, students met in science teacher Bob Banos' robotics lab at Galileo Academy in San Francisco to visit Michael Eisen's Biotechnology lab at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) without ever leaving their classroom

Bob Banos' students follow Tele-Actor Annamarie HoGalileo students participated in a Tele-Actor field-test produced by Ken Goldberg's Alpha Lab and Robot, Clone, Human (RCH) team-giving a virtual twist to the old idea of a field trip. The Tele-Actor is a skilled human outfitted with cameras and microphones connected to a wireless digital network. Live video and audio are broadcast to participants via the Internet or interactive television. Using the Tele-Actor, students can explore distant or restricted sites-such as a microelectronics clean room, a surgical operating room, or a biotechnology lab.

What is the IU?

The Interactive University Project (IU) enables UC Berkeley to make its unmatched resources of people and knowledge available on the Internet. We serve learners and educators, targeting K-12 teachers, students, their families, and local communities throughout the Bay Area and California.

IU Future--Evolving Our Model

A third phase of work is set to commence in Fall 2002. The goal is to open UC Berkeley resources to K-12 teachers, students, and all learners, by making them available on the Internet. A new website explains and demonstrates some of the plans and ideas.

IU activities are coordinated by UC Berkeley's Information Systems and Technology.
