| Youth-Plan Presents at Oakland City Hall |
| |
|
On Thursday evening, May 2, students from two East Bay High Schools sat down in Oakland City Hall's bustling Hearing Room 3, where the audience included Oakland School Superintendent Dennis Chaconas, Oakland Councilmember Nancy Nadel, and planners from the Oakland and Alameda communities. Thirty-six students from the schools presented their plans for two development projects. These presentations were the culmination of a semester of work.
Representing Oakland's McClymonds High, 22 ninth-grade students explained their proposals for the Nelson Mandela Transit Village Plaza at the West Oakland BART Station. From Alameda's BASE Charter School, 14 tenth- and eleventh-graders presented their design plans for work at the new Community Garden at the former Naval Air Base in Alameda.
The evening began with an address by Superintendent Chaconas, Councilmember Nadel then spoke briefly, after which the students presented their development proposals and options.

| IU Future--Evolving Our Model |
A third phase of work is set to commence in Fall 2002. The goal is to open UC Berkeley resources to K-12 teachers, students, and all learners, by making them available on the Internet. A new website explains and demonstrates some of the plans and ideas.
