We have made available portions of a report, prepared in conjunction with
the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Education, that evaluates
accomplishments and lessons learned from our Phase 1 Projects.
The report covers the initial two-year phase of IU work, from 1996-1998, and
discusses the twenty pilot projects completed during that time.
During Phase 1, in partnership with the San Francisco and Oakland Unified
School Districts, the IU set out to develop a model of how the University can
best use the Internet to help K-12 students, their families, and teachers in
disadvantaged urban communities.

The Department of Commerce was a major funder of IU's Phase 1 Projects. There
are evaluations of IU work at the website of the
Department of Commerce Technology Opportunities Program (TOP).
TOP requires all grant recipients to conduct evaluations of their projects.
Evaluations based on project goals and objectives aid in self-monitoring and
allow project course corrections, assessment of short-term impacts, and development
of indicators of long-range impact. The Interactive University Project's evaluation
was chosen in Spring 2001 by TOP as an exemplary
evaluation. At the TOP site you will find both the IU's own
evaluation report, and an independant
case study report, commissioned by TOP and conducted by WESTAT,
a Rockville, Maryland, research and consulting firm.
For the past three years, the IU has also provided an annual evaluation report
to the School University Partnership Program, formerly the UC Berkeley Pledge:
