September 8, 2001: dilated pupils and web surfing

Ah, the joys of having a wireless network at home. I'm blogging while watching the Williams sisters battle for the U.S. Open Tennis championship (OK -- Venus just won.) (I must admit that the SF Chronicle article playing up the drama of sisterly competition and cooperation intrigued me, someone who had not watched professional tennis for years.)

I figure that at some point, I'll attend the The Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium.

I was feeling really quite energetic today until I went for my eye exam at the UCB Optometry Clinic. Having my pupils dilated for about four hours made me feel kinda out of it. Dilated pupils are a small price to pay for such a thorough, careful, and friendly examination that also supports the training of our future optometrists.

Last night, I had the great pleasure of attending the joint dramatization of stories from Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg Ohio (see an online version of the book) by two Bay Area companies, Word for Word and The Shotgun Players. As part of a theater-going group organized by a friend of a friend, I had no particular expectations for the play other than wanting to meet some other theater-going people. Now, I'm hooked -- I want to read Anderson's book. I also want to recommend the show; it closes on Sunday, Sept 16. There is a "pay-what-you-can" day this coming Wednesday at the Julia Morgan Theater.
