October 30

Barbara Gross Davis just posted to Teach-Net a list of resources (from the AAHE) for engaging with Sept 11 and its aftermath in a higher education context. I would probably use these resources if I were engaged in classroom instruction at this moment on this campus, especially in the social sciences and humanities.

I have mixed feelings about the rain.  It provides much needed refreshing of our land, which is so parched most of the year.  It reminds me of my own need to be renewed.  But it makes biking home at night so much more dangerous and unpleasant!

David is giving his talk today at EducauseA video featuring the award winners has also just been put up on the site.  (First time that I've seen the video...)

I'm flattered that Chris would draw a picture of our eating together at Vietnam Village Restaurant, one of my usual lunch time haunts.

I should look into the Custom Weblog Post Tool, which "allows the user to create (sub-)templates that have more structure then RU's default flat text box."  So far, I've been just typing into the EditThisPage box to keep this blog up.  However, I will want to have more sophisticated tools to let me mark up my posts with metadata so that I can categorize, break into chunks, reaggregate my pieces of writing.  Radio might help -- and this tool might be part of the solution.

A Bloggers' Lunch

Chris and I had lunch with Lloyd and Candace -- it was a wonderful F2F, IRL (face-to-face, in real life) buffet lunch at Raja Indian Cuisine.  We talked my things, some of which I said that I would be blog about.  So here goes.

Let me just first list some of the things that we talked about -- and fill in with details as I have some time:

Pictures in the works

On Sunday morning, when going for a morning walk up to the Peets' close to the Claremont Hotel, I decided to bring my digital camera to record that experience.  I love walking up and down Russell Avenue in Berkeley; it's so calm and calming, quiet and beautiful.  There's also tea and coffee waiting at the top of the hill.   I rarely stop to buy any drinks.  It's more the morning bustle that makes me happy:  joggers, commuters, weekend loungers out for a latte with their dogs.

Now as I'm trying to figure out how to get some of these pictures into this blog, I remember the good ol' adage, "start simple".  OK -- expect one picture tonight.  (I took 2048x1536 pictures which are much too large for the Web.  Maybe I should have gotten a cheaper digital camera which is more portable than my fancy 3.3 mpixel Olympus which I don't want to carry with me too often.  With these large photos I have to first generate smaller versions (and perhaps thumbnails) to post here.)

Morimur again

I'm still listening very intensely to Morimur.  After lunch, Chris and I talked fair use as it pertains to music clips on the Web.  I would like to provide snippets from the Morimur album.  Snippets are available already on the bn.com page for the album.  (e.g., the chaconne realaudio snippet)  Did B&N and amazon have to make a special deal with the publisher?  (I noticed that I haven't seen too many music sites with such clips. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough.)
