I finally gave in, ordering a new subscription to The New Yorker, this time through University Subscription Service, an educational discounter for magazines. The following quote pushed me over the edge: "My New Yorker hasn't come yet (it's probably out in Ohio getting electromagnetized for anthrax), and the magazine has reserved Bernard Lewis' piece for subscribers, withholding it from the Web-plebs, so I'll have nothing to say about it. Maybe I can deal with it later in the week."

Speaking of Bernard Lewis, I've been meaning to read his famous Atlantic Monthly essay, "Roots of Muslim Rage", which is online (one of the reasons I subscribe to The Atlantic is to support an organization that been so thorough at putting its publication online and opening it all up to the public.)
