I spent the day at Stanford University, attending the IMS Open Technical Forum.  The next task is now to review all the docs from the various working groups of IMS.   Although the presentations in the morning were quite enlightening (more details later), I have to say that I was most struck by how different the Stanford campus is from Berkeley.  "You're not in Kansas anymore."   (I have to say that I was impressed with the Stanford Bookstore.)

BTW, my favorite talk was that of Ralph LeVan (of OCLC Research).  He had some needed sobering cautions to those of us who are blithely entering into areas of well-known and long-standing ignorance, assuming that we can solve problems that have defeated many very hard-working smart people before us.
