Blogging delight, etc.

Why Copyright Laws Hurt Culture (Wired) "Because copyright law now also precludes "derivative use" of copyright material, people cannot develop new material based on copyrighted work without permission. Lessig said this radically changes how human culture will evolve, since "the property owner has control over how that subsequent culture is built." This restriction also stymies technological innovation, as developers cannot follow the long-established practice of taking existing code and enhancing it to produce something new, he said.

I'm grateful to Lynn for her reference to Using the Web to Foster Critical Thinking Skills. My favorite resource for university-level teachers trying to teach critical thinking/active learning in the classroom is John Bean's Engaging Ideas (which, alas, is not on the web.)

Phil Wolff: Blogging for personal branding?

The IU Blogging Community

How to describe it? A nucleating event, a turning point, a pivotal moment, perhaps. I'm excited about the amount of blogging activity that has emerged among my colleagues at the IU (Chris, Isaac, Karin) and among our partners (Lynn). When people just start blogging, there is the "gee-whiz" feeling, the tentative first posts that are experiments with the new medium. I'm pleased with how quickly our small community is wading into deeper waters. The current discussion about privacy and self-censorship with respect to blogging is an important one that I want to join in...when I have some time this afternoon. There are ties to the current discussion on the knowledge logs group (about access control, etc) that I'd like to lay out.
