Happy New Year!! It's 2002

Reading Day 2002

I just got back from one of the best New Year's Day I've had in many, many years. My friends Walt and Ginny hosted a "reading day" at their house, an event that W&G think of as a refuge from footballl for people who read. Five of us gathered for an energizing breakfast at 10am before settling around the wood stove to read the books we had each brought. During the occasional break, we shared what we were each reading and why. Reading materials included The Poisonwood Bible, Wide as the Waters, Blessings in Disguise (Alec Guiness' memoirs), Life of the Beloved, The Hedgehog and the Fox, books about Samuel Johnson, and If on a Winter's Night A Traveler.

The company was first-rate, the conversation stimulating, and the opportunity to stop and actually read, uninterrupted for an hour at a time, invaluable.
