Blackboard and Manila

Some good discussion happening about Blackboard and Manila

See the thread (BlackBoardBlogs) on Adam Curry's blog and David Carter-Todd's thoughtful analysis. Note Pat Delaney's role and participation. (Pat mentions Chris as the one who got him into Manila.)

I have some thoughts to add....maybe later tonight or tomorrow. Basically, we're very interested in seeing integration among the various tools used on the Berkeley campus, which includes Blackboard and Manila -- and possibly OKI down the road. Here's where all the IMS work comes in, doesn't it?

I don't mind this type of stereotyping

Laura: "Hmm, seems to be a guy thing this week--writing in a way that is so searching, electric, courageous in its acknowledgement of contradiction and uncertainty. Dudes, you'll have to forgive my stereotyping if I envision you as literary cowboys, balancing tenaciously on the backs of bulls."

I just don't know how long I can keep going before the bull throws me off its back....

I'm not sure what is more distressing

....that high-tech companies might be ripping off universities or that universities might have lost sight of contributing to the advancement of knowledge first and foremost. Sigh. (Summaries from Educause)

CORNELL SUES HEWLETT-PACKARD FOR PATENT INFRINGEMENT

Cornell University and the Cornell Research Foundation have charged Hewlett-Packard with violating its patented method for boosting a computer's processing speed. Cornell said HP has ignored its repeated efforts to discuss the patent, which the university said HP has been violating since 1995, and estimated that damages from the lawsuit could reach $100 million. Cornell President Hunter Rawlings III said, "The intellectual property of the university and of the members of its faculty are among our most important assets." HP responded that it has not violated any patent and vowed to fight the suit "vigorously." Cornell VP Henrik Dullea said the suit is unusual for the school, which he said generally has very good relations with companies. The patent at issue, awarded to Cornell professor H.C. Torng in 1989, covered a more efficient technique for computer instruction processing.

MIT AND TECH FIRM SUE TECH COMPANIES

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Electronics For Imaging Inc. (EFI) have filed suit charging 94 companies with illegally using their patented image editing software. The software was developed by MIT professor William Schreiber. EFI gained control of the patent in 1990 and shares revenues from its use with MIT. EFI is asking that Microsoft, Polaroid, and IBM, among others, pay royalties for use of the software over the past six years. The companies named in the suit have yet to comment, while EFI would not say how much in back payments it was seeking.
