InfoWorld: Exec touts Semantic Web #

Is it a good or bad sign that "execs" are now talking about the semantic web?  The paragraph has a good quote on the challenges against and practical realization of the semantic web any time soon:

Ronald Schmelzer, senior analyst at Zap Think in Waltham, Mass., was skeptical about the chances for the Semantic Web, however.

"The Semantic Web is a good idea, since we're definitely walking our way up the integration 'stack.' As soon as we solve business process and workflow problems, semantic problems are coming up. However, it's also a classically very difficult problem to solve -- if we can solve [it] at all. We shouldn't have to wait five to 10 years for us to solve these problems in order for us to utilize Web services," Schmelzer said.

"While the Semantic Web is a useful exercise to help us nail out the complex issues involved in tying together businesses, its practical use [won't be seen] for years -- if not decades -- to come," Schmelzer said.

Getting rid of telemarketers #
A very helpful script to use when talking to telemarketers.  It helps to know the legal tools we have available -- and the ability we have to sue if we need to get rid of pesky callers.  (The script also allows one to remain civil and focus on stopping the often bothersome machinery of telemarketing, rather than venting against the caller -- who is at the bottom of the machine.)  [link via Mark Pilgrim]

Milton helps me to chill #

I've been feeling terribly stressed this morning -- for many reasons I suppose, some beyond my control, but many of my own doing.  I am a driven man, pushed along by personal ambition.  This is not the way it should be.

At times like this, I think often of John Milton's sonnet "On His Blindness" (audio)  which I quote here:

When I consider how my light is spent
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide,
And that one Talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest He returning chide,
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask. But Patience, to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts. Who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is kingly: thousands at his bidding speed,
And post o'er land and ocean without rest;
They also serve who only stand and wait."

The last line "They also serve who only stand and wait" is a bracing challenge and soothing reminder to all of us very, very busy people.
