At about 5pm today, after a long and reasonably productive day, I exited Barrows Hall to go home. As I approached the bike rack from a distance, I asked, "Why is my bike lying on its side?" As I got closer, I thought, "Oh no -- what happened to my bike?"
I couldn't quite believe what I saw before me. The front wheel was twisted and the frame was cracked, bent around the bike rack. The bike seat was decapitated, eerily enough.
"It must have a car", I thought. Thankfully, I found a little note that started "I broke your bike" and added a phone number and a name. Still somewhat stunned, I walked back into Barrows to find my coworkers Chris, Isaac, and Karin. They commiserated. I felt strange. It's only a bike -- but it's a bike I've had for seven years. It's taken a lot of miles and I was still very happy with it. This incident showed how much sentimental value I placed on my bike -- and how it now lies there crippled, saddening me.
The good news, I suppose, is that I had my camera with me. "Great, I have something for my blog today!" And when Chris came out, he volunteered to take some pictures of me with my poor old bike. The pictures turned out well -- but there is something in me that keeps me from posting them -- at least for now.
I walked home this evening. I realized how much I enjoyed getting around Berkeley on my bike -- and how little patience now I have for walking. Now there's something wrong with this impatience, I know. But the heavy backpack was a burden.
