WBUR Connection on Glenn Gould #

In August, Lloyd and I had a little exchange about Glenn Gould.  I'm listening to an audio segment on Glenn Gould from an NPR affiliate in Boston.  Wonderful.  Here's the blurb on the segment:

Glenn Gould and the Quest for Perfection

For many, Glenn Gould was the 20th century's greatest interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The very first recording he ever made, at the age of 22, was the challenging "Goldberg Variations."

It was a passionate, sensual, provocative performance, and the start of a long and controversial career. "The purpose of art," Glenn Gould said, "is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline, but rather the gradual lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity." In 1981, he recorded the Goldberg Variations once again, still passionate and provocative, but this time also reflective and serene.

The recording was released just a few days before his death, at the age of 50. Glenn Gould, the legacy of a virtuoso, and an intellectual.

There is also a short interview between Scott Simon and Tim Page on NPR.

Is UCSD making the right decision? #

Quote from the CNet story:

The University of California at San Diego has ordered a student organization to delete hyperlinks to an alleged terrorist Web site, citing the recently enacted USA Patriot Act.

School administrators have told the group, called the Che Cafe Collective, that linking to a site supporting the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC) would not be permitted because it violated federal law.

In a letter to the Che Cafe Collective, UCSD University Centers Director Gary Ratcliff said the hyperlink violated a law that bans "providing material support to support terrorists." Ratcliff warned that the student organization would face disciplinary action if it did not immediately remove the link to FARC.
