Richard Stallman to speak on campus #

Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer Networks CITRIS Distinguished Lecture Series Richard Stallman Founder, GNU Project and MacArthur Fellow Tuesday, October 22, 2002 Hewlett Packard Auditorium, 306 Soda Hall 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Abstract: Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. LMSLog #

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with the Web Services group of Educational Technology Services on the Berkeley campus.  We spoke about an image database project that the group is doing.   It was a lot of fun as we talked about a wide range of issues:  XML, metadata, image databases, how faculty and students would use the materials, other image databases projects on campus (including CalPhotos, the Architecture Slide Library), whether there are any coordinated metadata efforts on campus.  It was a lot of fun -- and we're hoping to collaborate more....
