Notelets for 2003/03/02 #

I'm still making my way through Kenneth Pollack's The Threatening Storm.  I did see some articles by Jonathan Schell today, including a piece in The Nation -- "The Case Against the War" and something in Harper's.  On my list to read as I still am wrestling with what is just and right.

*

Some good articles in today's (Sunday's) SF Chronicle:

Who Armed Iraq?:  "Embarrassed, no doubt, by revelations of their own complicity in Mideast arms proliferation, the U.S.-led Security Council censored the entire dossier, deleting more than 100 names of companies and groups that profited from Iraq's crimes and aggression. The censorship came too late, however. The long list -- including names of large U.S. corporations -- Dupont, Hewlett-Packard, and Honeywell -- was leaked to a German daily, Die Tageszeitung. Despite the Security Council coverup, the truth came out. "

Related pieces:  Who Will Fight the War?  and Who Will Suffer? and a review on Dana Priest's The Mission:  "Indeed, Dana Priest argues in her timely new book, 'The Mission: Waging War and Keeping Peace With America's Military,' that the United States relies disproportionately on its military and often the discretion of regional commanders such as Zinni to address problems that are largely political or economic."

Lighter story in the magazine -- is home ownership overrated in our society?

A pean to Angelika Kirchschlager in today's New York Times Magazine.  I saw her in concert last Sunday -- and I can vouch that she was, indeed, "stunningly beautiful -- dark tousled hair, high cheekbones, smoky eyes, the whole package."  Alas, she didn't sing any Bach on Sunday.   (Now, are we all making too big of a deal about a singer's looks?  I daresay that I am....)
