Kickoff of Scholar's Box Essay Series (#0)

Posted by Raymond Yee, 2/3/04 at 10:03:49 AM. Today, I kick off a series of occasional essays about the Scholar's Box and closely related topics. If the series is successful, readers will be able to understand the work that the Interactive University is doing on the Scholar's Box without having to hunt and peck for sundry clues scattered throughout the many presentations, articles, and weblog entries in which we have referred to the Scholar's Box.

It will important for readers to understand that the Scholar's Box is very much a work in progress. Later essays will almost certainly have to correct or update an earlier essay, to reflect not only a better understanding on the part of the authors but also the moving target that is the Scholar's Box.

I'm hoping that writing about the Scholar's Box in a serial fashion will be a good way for us to share our work as it is happening rather than to wait until ït's all figured out. Moreover, such a format will allow others to provide input earlier rather than later. Such input, we anticipate, will be very helpful.

Having written that, I feel the need to say: this series is an experiment. I don't know how long it will last or whether it will work and when I'll end it. Hopefully, I'll get a good number of clear, helpful essays out before it ends.

A few more things to note about this series of essay.

  • At this point, I don't have a clear schedule or a list of topics worked out. However, a rough schedule/list of topics is to be found on my wiki. I'll be publishing most of the essays on my weblog and listing the series on my wiki.
  • I anticipate that I won't be the sole author of the essays in this series -- especially because the Scholar's Box represents the creativity, ideas, and input of so many people. I thought, however, that I could kick off the series of essays with some of the things that I care about and expect others to join in.
  • Some essays will be written in response to some immediate concerns. Some will be following the main thread. But I will make a strong effort to make sure that latter essays build upon the earlier essays.
  • I'll be reworking some of the essays (and comments I receive) into more formal articles to be published elsewhere.

The series of essays is not a substitute for the materials that we are accumulating on our weblogs and wikis, which will likely have more up-to-date materials. They are, however, supposed to help readers make sense of the materials in a way that my other forums have not been so successful.

Coming Up: Essay #1 A Roadmap for All This Writing: After providing a very brief description of the Scholar's Box, I lay out a roadmap for the rest of the series. (Expected date of publication: Thursday, Feb 5, 2004)
