It's almost 6pm now -- and it has been a short but busy work week. I'll blog a bit tonight (I suppose, while I watch The West Wing). I am still hoping that one day it'll be basically effortless to share what I've been learning. (For the past three hours, I've been learning about the latest developments in DHTML. I was wondering why a Javascript example that works in Netscape 4.78 and IE 6.0 does not work in Netscape 6.2 or Mozilla 1.1. I hope to tell you why later tonight in case you are dying to know the answer....)
I also want to respond to Jon Udell's post about "Amazon and the Local Library" David also refers to the post, asking me about Z39.50. I'm in no way an expert on this topic -- but I believe that Z39.50 is the library world's standard for interoperability among all these various library catalogs. I've been wanting to play with some Z39.50 software to make sense of how it's actually used -- and how Z39.50 can be integrated with things like XML and web services. Of course, I'm not the only one interested in this topic. A quick google search on "Z39.50 XML" brings up Z39.50 and XML - Bridging the old and the new, a paper about JAFER, "a simplified XML based API above the Z39.50 protocol"
Anyhow, more to say soon. I got to get on my bike and make my way home. Dinner, the prospect of the company of my housemates, TV, and turkey tomorrow await me.
